OCA BICYCLE SCHEME
One of our accomplishments this summer has been to link up with Jennifer from Wheels for All Oxford (https://www.wfaoxford.org/) and launch our own OCA bicycle scheme. Every holiday, some of our parents struggle to send their kids to the OCA holiday activities because they don’t have any way to organise transport. Bus fares are too expensive and these families don’t own a car. For the kids, this means so many missed opportunities, all year round. We have been thinking for a long time what we could do about this ….
Enter Jennifer & Wheels for All Oxford. Thanks to Jennifer, and to Josh from Active Oxfordshire who paid for all (!) the costs, we were able to hand out over a dozen of bicycles to kids in our communities. You can see how much it means to them.
Our plans, of course, don’t stop there. For one, we have more kids and more adults who need bikes. If you have any bikes you don’t need, please be in touch with us at email@example.com or 07412537961. We can arrange pick up and have a bike mechanic who can fix them up.
We will also run courses for our community members so they can learn how to bike safely. A bike is of no use if you don’t know how to ride it. If you know how to ride a bike and would like to help with the course, please be in touch.
Finally, we hope to find a volunteer bike mechanic – amateur or professional – who will help keep our communities’ bikes in good shape long term. Many community members will not be able to afford market rates for bike repairs and we want to permanently empower them to cycle around Oxford. If you have any tips, please send them our way.
With the kids and eventually the parents equipped with bikes, the whole family will become more independent, be able to freely travel around the city, and hopefully join us at the next OCA holiday activities. The OCA bicycle scheme is rolling, by the community, for the community.
